Rome’s iconic Trevi Fountain is currently undergoing maintenance, during which an elevated

walkway has been installed to offer tourists a unique, close-up view of the monument. Inaugurated by Mayor Roberto Gualtieri, this steel walkway accommodates approximately 130 visitors at a time, aiming to provide an intimate experience without the usual overcrowding.

Traditionally, visitors toss coins into the fountain’s basin, a ritual believed to ensure a return trip to Rome. However, with the fountain drained for cleaning, coin tossing from the walkway is prohibited. To maintain this cherished custom, a small pool has been placed adjacent to the walkway to collect coins, which are donated to the Caritas charity to fund meals for those in need.

The maintenance work is expected to conclude by the end of the year, after which the fountain will resume its traditional operations.
