In a surprising development for Kennesaw State University’s football program, Head Coach Brian Bohannon says he was fired after 10 seasons, despite the university’s announcement indicating he stepped down. Milton Overton, the university’s director of athletics, announced Bohannon’s departure over the weekend, framing it as a voluntary decision. However, Bohannon posted on social media, clarifying that he did not resign and was informed of the university’s decision to replace him.
“Contrary to what’s been reported, I want to be clear that I did not step down,” Bohannon wrote, highlighting his dedication to the program since its inception.
Bohannon, who led the Owls to rapid success in the Football Championship Subdivision, helped position KSU as a competitive force. Under his leadership, KSU made a historic transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision and, this season, joined Conference USA. His accomplishments include guiding the Owls to become one of the most successful startup programs in FCS history.
Co-Offensive Coordinator Chandler Burks is expected to serve as interim head coach during this transitional phase. Burks, a notable KSU figure, was the 2018 FCS National Performer of the Year and is set to be inducted into the KSU Athletics Hall of Fame.
Athletic Director Overton assured fans that focus remains on supporting the athletes through the remainder of the season, which includes two home games. A nationwide search will begin immediately for Bohannon’s successor.
The university has not commented on Bohannon’s claim regarding his departure.
