Israeli Airstrikes on Gaza Schools Shelter Kill 48, Including Children, Amid Intensified Military Campaign

【CSN News】On Tuesday, Israeli airstrikes targeted school compounds in Gaza that were sheltering thousands of displaced Palestinians, resulting in at least 48 deaths, including women and children, according to hospital officials. The attacks occurred as Israel escalated its military operations in the region.

In the Al Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza, a strike on a school compound led to the deaths of 33 individuals, with many others injured. Footage from the scene depicted extensive destruction, with residents searching through rubble for survivors. Safaa Al Khaldi, a woman sheltering at the school, reported that her son was injured in the attack. She expressed desperation over the dire conditions, stating, “Our children are starving… What did we do wrong?”

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the strike targeted “terrorists who were operating within a Hamas command and control center,” but did not provide further details. At the site, some residents voiced anger at Hamas, accusing the group of operating within civilian areas and endangering lives.

Another airstrike on Wednesday hit a school in the Al-Tuffah neighborhood east of Gaza City, killing at least 15 people and wounding 10 more, according to Gaza’s Civil Defense. Additionally, five Palestinians were killed in an airstrike in the Al-Rimal neighborhood, including journalist Yehya Sobeih, who had celebrated the birth of his daughter just a day earlier.

Since the resumption of bombardments on March 18, over 2,500 Palestinians have been killed, as reported by Gaza’s Ministry of Health. The humanitarian situation has deteriorated, with the Palestine Red Crescent Society reporting that 13 of its 29 clinics have shut down, and the remaining facilities operating with limited capabilities. Furthermore, 21 out of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are only partially functioning, according to the UN health agency.

Israel’s blockade has severely restricted the entry of food and medicine, pushing Gaza’s healthcare system toward collapse. The UN’s humanitarian agency (OCHA) has warned of a “deepening catastrophe” in the region.

The recent strikes coincide with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement of plans to displace Gaza’s population to the south, following the approval of an expanded military operation. The international community has expressed concern over the escalating violence and its impact on civilians.
