【CSN NEWS】Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner has filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk and his political group, America PAC, seeking to stop Musk’s $1 million sweepstakes aimed at registered voters, labeling it an “illegal lottery scheme.”
Krasner, a Democrat, is urging a state judge to block the sweepstakes, arguing that it solicits personal information and a political commitment from Philadelphia residents and others in swing states in exchange for a chance at a $1 million prize. “That is a lottery,” the lawsuit argues. “And it is indisputably an unlawful lottery.”
While Musk’s super PAC did not directly respond to the lawsuit, they highlighted a recent winner from Hastings, Michigan.
According to the suit, Pennsylvania law requires that lotteries be state-operated. Krasner asserts that Musk’s giveaway contravenes these regulations. The lawsuit further claims that certain winners seem politically connected, noting that some have reportedly attended Trump rallies in Pennsylvania, casting doubt on the giveaway’s alleged randomness.
Referencing Pennsylvania lottery and consumer protection laws, the lawsuit does not address federal or state vote-buying restrictions. The U.S. Justice Department has separately warned Musk’s PAC, stating that the giveaway may breach federal laws against offering monetary incentives for voter registration.
