Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to Temporarily Transfer Duties to Deputy for Medical Procedure

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is set to undergo a “minimally invasive” and “non-surgical” procedure at Walter Reed Medical Center on Friday night, according to Pentagon spokesman Major Gen. Patrick Ryder. During this time, Austin will temporarily transfer his authorities to his deputy, Kathleen Hicks.

The procedure is related to a bladder issue resulting from a surgery Austin underwent earlier this year to treat prostate cancer. This disclosure is part of the Pentagon’s effort to be more transparent about Austin’s health. Previously, Austin underwent two surgeries at Walter Reed without informing the president, his deputy, or the public, which sparked controversy. Austin has since acknowledged the need for greater transparency regarding his health and pledged to keep the public informed.
