Chicago increased police and safety patrols along the lakefront

Chicago city leaders have increased police and safety patrols along the lakefront due to concerns about beach safety.

The increased police presence is in response to crowds flocking to the shoreline with the nice weather. Some people have been turned away for trying to bring in alcohol. Incidents like a recent one involving an SUV being attacked by a group of men have prompted the city to take action.

Police were seen patrolling North Avenue Beach on Saturday and checking bags at the entrance. Some visitors are surprised by the protocols, while others feel it is necessary for safety.

The beaches officially reopen on Friday with lifeguard staffing.
