Google is adding a new security feature to Android 15 to protect against “juice jacking” attacks, according to a report by Android Authority. Currently being tested in the Android 15 beta, this feature aims to enhance device security when using public charging stations.
What is “Juice Jacking”?
“Juice jacking” occurs when a hacker secretly sends data payloads to your device via a USB connection that supports both charging and data transfer. This type of attack can happen through compromised mobile charging stations. If successful, hackers could gain access to your device, jeopardizing your privacy and security.
How Android 15 Addresses the Threat
Android 15 will allow users to restrict USB data access while in lockdown mode, enabling them to charge their devices safely using a USB cable without risking data transfer. Currently, this option is not available on Android devices.
To activate this feature, users will need to access the Power menu by holding down the power button (if their phone is set up this way). From there, a simple tap on the lockdown button will immediately restrict data transfer. Lockdown mode, first introduced in Android 9 in 2018, originally obscured notifications and disabled all authentication methods except for the primary one (PIN, password, or pattern).
Addressing User Concerns
While “juice jacking” is relatively rare, it can occur in public places such as airports. Google’s new security feature in Android 15 provides additional peace of mind for users concerned about this potential threat.
Android 15 Launch and Features
Android 15 is expected to be publicly released later this year, initially available on Google Pixel devices before rolling out to other Android-based phones. The update includes several new features such as:
- Notification Cooldown: To manage and prioritize notifications.
- Partial Screen Sharing: Allows sharing specific parts of your screen.
- Audio Sharing: Enhanced audio sharing capabilities.
- Bluetooth and NFC Improvements: More straightforward Bluetooth controls and more reliable NFC performance.
- App Archiving: New options for managing and archiving apps.
Internally, Android 15 is codenamed “Vanilla Ice Cream.”
With these updates, Google continues to enhance the functionality and security of its mobile operating system, ensuring that users are better protected against evolving cyber threats.
