World Economic Forum : The World’s Best Countries for Tourism

The United States has been named the world’s best country for travel and tourism in 2024 by the World Economic Forum (WEF). The rankings consider various factors, including infrastructure, natural resources, sustainability, labor availability, and competitive pricing. It’s important to note that the WEF’s assessment focuses on tourism infrastructure and the business of travel rather than the experience of individual travelers.

Europe in the Lead

Europe dominates the top 10, with six countries making the list. Spain ranks highest overall, reflecting Europe’s resilience as a travel destination with strong intraregional travel flows and excellent train connectivity. Europe’s robust economies, strong currencies, and high travel propensity contribute to its top rankings.

France, positioned fourth overall, is preparing for the global spotlight with the upcoming Summer Olympics in Paris. The power of European passports also plays a role, with countries like France, Germany, and Italy featuring prominently.

The Scene in Asia

Asia’s tourism is bouncing back, with Japan ranking third. The country has seen a surge in tourism post-pandemic, attracting millions of visitors. China, in eighth place, has eased visa requirements for several European countries and simplified the process for American tourists, enhancing its appeal.

American Beauty

The US, the only North American country in the top 10, stands out as a “mature” tourism market with extensive infrastructure to support visitors. From national parks to vibrant cities, the US offers diverse attractions. However, there are concerns about a potential tourism labor shortage.

Canada ranks just outside the top 10 in 11th position.

Balancing Tourism and Overtourism

The popularity of these destinations raises concerns about overtourism. The US and China, due to their size, can better manage visitor flow. However, Spain and Italy face challenges. Barcelona has restricted cruise ships, and protests in the Canary Islands highlight local discontent. Venice has introduced a “tourist tax,” and Bolzano – South Tyrol in northern Italy has capped hotel capacity.
